Paint your own traditional Uzbek clay or wooden figurine in a hands-on Samarkand workshop. Discover local patterns, colours, folklore and create this iconic piece of art to take home as a souvenir.
Meet a local artist and discover one of the more playful and colourful sides of Uzbek craftsmanship through a hands-on figurine painting experience in Samarkand. Rather than simply looking at traditional art, you’ll have the chance to learn about it, meet a local creative and create something yourself. Your experience begins with comfortable pickup from your accommodation and a short transfer to the local workshop. Your local host will introduce you to the artist and help you discover the stories and traditions behind the craft. At the workshop, explore a selection of traditional Uzbek clay and wooden figurines, inspired by handmade toys, puppets and folk sculpture. You’ll see figures depicting people in traditional dress, musicians, horsemen, animals and characters from Uzbek folklore, and learn how these playful creations reflect local life and traditions. Before picking up your brush, the artist will introduce you to the floral, geometric and ornamental motifs found throughout Uzbek decorative arts. Discover traditional colour combinations and patterns, then choose your own figurine and start bringing it to life.
Now it’s your turn to get creative. Paint your figurine by hand using traditional Uzbek colours and patterns for inspiration, or create something completely personal. Your artist will guide you through the techniques, help with colour and design choices, and share tips along the way while giving you plenty of freedom to make the piece your own. No previous artistic experience is required — there is no single right way to decorate your figurine. Whether you keep your design traditional or let your imagination take over, the finished piece will be uniquely yours. Once your figurine is complete, take it home as a colourful handmade souvenir that you created yourself. It’s a relaxed break from sightseeing and a chance to connect with Uzbek culture through creativity, while spending time with a local artist. After the workshop, enjoy comfortable drop-off back at your accommodation.
