Begin your experience with a personal pickup by your local guide, who takes you on a one-hour walking journey through Bukhara’s atmospheric Old Town. Along the way, hear legends of the Bukharan Emirate, tales of the covered trading domes where merchants from China, India, and Persia once haggled over silk and spices, stories of Sufi mystics, and curious local traditions that reveal the deep cultural layers of this 2,500-year-old city.
Arrive at a historic workshop inside Bukhara’s UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, and be enveloped in the aromatic scent of fresh wood shavings. Bukhara’s carved wooden architecture tells stories in three dimensions. Unlike the geometric precision of Khivan carving, Bukhara’s celebrated style flows — deep relief work creates dramatic shadows that shift with the sun. Your instructor’s family has carved Bukhara’s palace doors, mosque columns, and residential interiors for five generations. Your introduction covers history: Bukhara’s woodcarving reached its zenith in the 18th–19th centuries, when wealthy merchants competed fiercely to commission the most elaborate carved decorations. Examine woods used in Bukharan carving: mulberry for warm color, walnut for structural strength, apricot for its beautiful golden tone. Then, begin your hands-on learning. Select a traditional Bukharan pattern — perhaps a stylized flower with curling petals or a section of the islimi vine motif — and learn fundamental technique: establishing depth, removing background material, creating smooth transitions. What distinguishes this masterclass is the relationship with your instructor. He shares apprenticeship memories, points out specific pieces — ‘My grandfather carved this doorframe in 1968’ — and teaches you to see carving as language. Leave with your finished piece and eyes that will forever see Bukhara’s carved surfaces differently.
