Samarkand

Great monuments, small details, living craft

Begin with the great Timurid ensembles, then make time for the older city at Afrosiyob and the working looms of Hudjum. Registan, Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-e-Amir deserve unhurried visits. Konigil’s paper mill is a separate outing beyond the central monument circuit.

Registan Square

Address: Registan Square, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Admission: Paid at the entrance
Coordinates: 39.654504, 66.974962

Three madrasahs frame Samarkand’s most recognizable square. Compare their façades rather than treating them as a single building, then choose which interiors to study. Confirm the current ticket and any separate evening programme.

Visit Registan Square at different times of day—the blue tiles look completely different in the soft morning light and the warm glow of evening golden hour.

The avenue of mausoleums invites a close look at tile, calligraphy and changing architectural scale. It is also a religious place: let local visitors set the pace, keep the route clear and ask before photographing people.

Shah-i-Zinda can get crowded, so visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a quieter experience.

Mausoleum of Amir Temur

Address: Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Admission: Paid at the entrance
Coordinates: 39.648571, 66.969171

The mausoleum of Amir Temur is a different encounter from the open space of Registan. Give the approach and the interior their own attention, and follow current visitor rules rather than assuming access to every part of the complex.

Don’t forget to look up inside Gur-e-Amir—the intricate gilded ceiling is one of its most beautiful details.

Admission: Paid at the entrance
Coordinates: 39.660815, 66.979530

Bibi-Khanym is one of Samarkand’s great architectural encounters. Look at the relationship between the monumental entrance, domes and open space rather than rushing toward a single photograph. Confirm which areas are accessible during your visit.

Ulughbek Observatory

Ulughbek Observatory

Address: Ulugbek Observatory, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Admission: Paid at the entrance
Coordinates: 39.674760, 67.005621

Before telescopes, Samarkand’s astronomers used architecture as an instrument. Built in 1428–1429, Ulugbek’s observatory housed an enormous measuring arc aligned with the meridian. The surviving underground section is a fragment of that instrument, not simply a passageway. Ulugbek’s school recorded the positions of 1,018 stars. Look at the model or interpretation first, then return to the trench: the size of the structure begins to explain how careful observation could achieve such precision.

The surviving section of Ulugh Beg’s Observatory lies underground. For a clearer picture of how the complete building once looked, visit the reconstruction in Eternal City.

Afrasiab Museum of the History

Address: Afrasiab Museum of the History of Samarkand, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Admission: Paid at the entrance
Coordinates: 39.669361, 66.993345

Begin with the museum’s interpretation of ancient Samarkand before exploring the surrounding archaeological landscape. The painted scenes offer a different encounter from the city’s later monuments. Check current opening arrangements instead of relying on an old weekly timetable.

The Afrosiyob Museum is best suited to history enthusiasts. If your time in Samarkand is limited, you may prefer to prioritize the city’s main monuments.

Siab Bazaar

Address: Siab Bazaar, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Admission: Free
Coordinates: 39.662482, 66.980957

The bazaar near Bibi-Khanym is a place to look at bread, produce and everyday trade. Ask before photographing sellers, compare what is seasonal, and confirm current market activity locally rather than assuming a fixed weekly closure.

Siyob Bazaar is a lively place to browse and people-watch, but it’s also popular with tourists, so prices can be higher. Compare a few stalls before buying.

Eternal City Historical-Ethnographic Park is a themed park built to recreate scenes from Samarkand's past, combining reconstructed architecture with displays on regional history and daily life. It sits outside the historic center, making it more of a planned excursion than a casual stop. The park works well as a half-day outing, particularly for travelers curious about Uzbek history and crafts but short on time to piece it together from separate museums.

Eternal City is full of artisan workshops, so take time to explore and watch the masters at work. To try a craft yourself, remember to book your workshop in advance with CraftnCulture.

Meros Paper Mill, Konigil Village

Address: Konigil village, outside the central monument circuit of Samarkand.

Mulberry-bark papermaking turns a Silk Road trade into a process visitors can follow. The mill, water-powered equipment and finishing stages make this a rewarding craft outing. The Mukhtarov brothers’ revival of traditional techniques gives the place its present character.

Konigil is a lovely green escape from Samarkand’s heat—take your time to enjoy the shade and slower pace.

Address: Khoja-Ismail settlement, Payaryk district, Samarkand region
Coordinates: 39.81521778185127, 66.94457169102142

The scholar’s name can send travellers to the wrong city. Imam al-Bukhari was associated with Bukhara, but his memorial complex stands in Payaryk district in the Samarkand region. The complex was rebuilt and documented in its renewed form in March 2026, with the mausoleum at its centre. Treat it as a separate pilgrimage excursion from Samarkand, not as a walkable Bukhara sight. Allow space for worship and reflection rather than approaching the mausoleum as a photo stop.

Arrange your transport to the Imam al-Bukhari complex and back in advance, so you have a reliable return ride.
