Learn the art of Samarkand gold embroidery in a hands-on workshop. Work with a master artisan, practice traditional gold-thread stitching, and discover centuries-old Silk Road craftsmanship.
Discover the refined art of Samarkand’s traditional gold embroidery through an immersive, hands-on workshop led by a skilled local artisan. This experience offers a rare opportunity to step inside one of Uzbekistan’s most delicate and prestigious craft traditions, where intricate gold-thread stitching has been used for centuries to decorate ceremonial garments, textiles, and decorative pieces along the Silk Road. Your experience begins with hotel pick-up in Samarkand and a comfortable transfer to a working artisan workshop. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a master embroiderer and introduced to the history and cultural significance of gold embroidery in Uzbekistan. You’ll learn how this craft evolved as a symbol of status and artistry, and how its techniques have been carefully preserved and passed down through generations.
Under the guidance of the artisan, you’ll begin your hands-on masterclass, learning how to work with fine gold threads and traditional tools. Step by step, you’ll practice stitching techniques used in authentic Uzbek embroidery, gaining an appreciation for the precision, patience, and skill required to create these highly detailed patterns. The workshop is designed for beginners, with a relaxed pace and personal guidance throughout. Beyond the technical aspect, this is also a cultural exchange. You’ll spend time in an authentic working studio, observe traditional methods up close, and engage with a living craft that remains an important part of Uzbekistan’s artistic identity today. At the end of the experience, you’ll also have the opportunity to create traditional Uzbek decorative stamps as a keepsake, allowing you to take home a personal artistic imprint of the experience. Finally, you’ll be comfortably transferred back to your hotel or agreed location in Samarkand, carrying with you a deeper understanding of this rare craft and the heritage behind it.
