Escape Samarkand for a truly local day in the mountains. Meet a Suzani artisan family, make plov and bread together, explore a home museum, try embroidery, and relax with breathtaking mountain views.
Step away from the monuments and busy streets of Samarkand and discover a slower, more authentic side of Uzbekistan. Just around an hour from the city, you’ll spend the day at the home of a local Suzani craftsman family, surrounded by peaceful mountain landscapes and genuine Uzbek hospitality. After pickup from your accommodation in Samarkand, enjoy a scenic drive into the countryside. When you arrive at the family home, you’ll be welcomed into their everyday world and spend the day learning, cooking, creating, and simply enjoying time together.
Start by making traditional Uzbek bread in a real clay tandoor. Learn how the dough is prepared, shaped, and decorated before placing it inside the hot tandoor oven, just as it has been done in Uzbek homes for generations. Once baked, sit down with your hosts and enjoy the warm, freshly made bread together.
Next, discover the beautiful tradition of Suzani embroidery. Your hosts will introduce you to their family’s craft, explain the meaning behind the intricate patterns and symbols, and share stories about how Suzani has been passed down through generations. You’ll also visit their personal home museum, filled with traditional textiles, handmade pieces, and objects connected to their family and local heritage. Then it’s your turn to create. During a hands-on Suzani masterclass, you’ll learn traditional embroidery techniques with guidance from the family. Take your time, ask questions, and experience the craft firsthand.
After the workshop, join your hosts in preparing plov, Uzbekistan’s iconic rice dish. Help with the cooking, learn about the ingredients and traditional techniques, and then sit down together to enjoy the meal you helped prepare. Once lunch is finished, slow down and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Relax on the family’s terrace with a cup of tea, chat with your hosts, and take in the beautiful mountain views. There is no rush—the afternoon is all about enjoying the moment and experiencing the relaxed rhythm of local life.
At the end of the day, your driver will take you comfortably back to Samarkand. This experience is perfect for travelers who want to go beyond Uzbekistan’s famous monuments and experience the country through its people, food, crafts, traditions, and hospitality. It’s a chance to spend a genuine day with a local family, learn traditional skills, share a meal, and discover a side of Uzbekistan that most visitors never get to see.
